Creativity = Positive expression. Developing creative opportunities in an aim to battle homelessness amongst youngsters, and the negative energy that surrounds it. Experiencing work at homeless charities showed me that creative practices like drawing and photography can help focus the mind upon something that is pleasurable, whilst at the same time, the freedom of positive expression, which may initially prove difficult to achieve. Artwork will be exhibited as an aim at raising awareness into homelessness amongst youngsters here in the UK, but also as a goal that will act as a driving force into the successes amongst the people involved.

Summary

The idea behind Make-Do is simple. We are facing an era where there will be limited resources and less support from government. Therefore we must explore creative ways to support one another, using the resources we already have. We would do this by transforming an empty property into a temporary incubator for community projects. A creative environment for young people to begin their own initiatives, meet new people and exchange skills. Both local and outside enthusiasm will meet to electrify local community provision. All activities will be user-driven; Make-Do will simply stimulate activity and facilitate this process.

BE FILMED! An innovative and creative filming project into health issues affecting young people. Equipped with video cameras, young people will unleash their creative potential, and produce dramatic short films. These films will go ‘online’ and 'on tour' in the community, to be seen by thousands. Stockport has the biggest health inequalities in Manchester. With training, teams of local young people will star, write, direct and produce their own films on important health topics. Though peer-to-peer education, problems from alcohol, bullying, drug misuse, obesity, smoking and STI’s will be tackled. This project is open to all young people.

What can WE do to tackle poverty and promote international development? We want to establish a network of university based International Development Societies that will seek to inspire, motivate and equip young people with the tools to take a pro-active response to this question. By: 1) INFORMING young people of the issues by holding speakers and debates, encouraging young people to peruse their own research and publish articles. 2) CAMPAIGNING to raise awareness of key development issues and NGOs 3) BEING PRO-ACTIVE, by providing information about volunteer projects, running workshops about setting up own development projects and running micro-finance initiatives.

striving for equality, development and sustainability in both the developing and developed countries, raising awareness by stimulating and awakening people’s social consciousness by using engaging techniques such as; role playing, design activities, craft work shops and selling tool kits. What makes Wakeup Campaign distinctive is that it uses art/design as an engagement tool to discuss development issues, rather than the common stereotyped imagery of poverty being seen on TV.

Summary

I wish to run a drama project for young people (aged 16 to 25) who are currently homeless and living in Manchester city centre. The project will consist of weekly workshops in which the young participants will be helped to develop a range of drama and creative skills, then use these skills to devise and rehearse their own performance. The performance will be created entirely by the participants and it will be showcased at a Manchester theatre and in local day centres and hostels for homeless youth.

Summary

My big idea to tackle the Big Challenge is to create a youth café central to Frome where young people aged 11-18 can go to simply hang out. It will provide a safe environment for them, keeping them off the streets, providing someone to talk to if they are in need, but most importantly a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of living in Frome and relax to live music, a game of pool, or just a chat over a glass of Coke. But get this, it will be set up and run by just us teenagers! Seeing as the adults have ignored our needs so far, let’s set this up and prove to them we are capable of something great!

Summary

We set up a group called New Turn, a think tank. Our aim is to get in speakers/debaters/lecturers to break down key and topical issues for a young audience, allowing us to make up our minds in an environment that encourages discussion and disagreement as opposed to one that encourages a narrow mindset. At New Turn we wish to show that young people are not incapable of engaging, rather it is about time the “system” engaged with them. Therefore, we wish to publish policy papers that reflect the way young people are affected by society, ultimately better informing policy makers.

The inspiration started with three Malawi Youth Bands (click youtube link). There is something special about these youths –their entrepreneurial spirit needs support. Most UK teenage bands strive to release the next hit - they need support. If successful, they will help combat unemployment and enhance the government’s campaign for entrepreneurial development amongst the youth – a big issue. At OneMusic we’re creating a product that links the two groups together and supports each other – a CD. Music from both will be recorded and sold nationwide. Our idea includes everyone -so join in, send us some music, buy a CD, hear us on internet radio, spread the One Music inspiration, change lives. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4O1Xv-F_1Z0 and www.oneempire.co.uk

We want to learn skills like plumbing, decorating and construction. We would be happy if we could start a workshop where we could be taught those trades. We would use the money to buy all the equipment needed and to set up the workshop. We would in turn then help others like us get involved in the workshop to teach or help them to learn and achieve. Most of us come from broken families and some of us are in care.We are at the risk of exclusion so this workshop would be like a dream come true as it would help us to be self sufficient!

To address issues surrounding unemployment and their impact on today's youth through a collaborative imaginative devised theatre piece involving Aberdeen Arts Centre's Castlegate Seniors aged 16-21 years and a project involving young, unemployed adults in Kungalv, Sweden. Through exploration of theatre and production skills, we aim to inspire both groups, build self confidence and self esteem and provide an inspirational platform on which to build further employability. We would like to be involved in the piece in Sweden in April 2011 and partner with the Aberdeen International Youth Festival to showcase our joint theatre piece in the UK in August 2011.

I want to help local teenagers get the best start in life. I have been working in a school in a very disadvantaged area, and want to help them help other children in the area. Their local library is under threat, and I want to provide an alternative after school in the school library, with the students as staff. I want them to create storybags to use reading in the community, a courtyard for the library, a functioning garden, and baby and toddler groups held in the library. This will help them to establish a basis for a future career.

With the launch of the "big society" by the Government, the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg spoke about the work of our group, as an example of people getting together to help in the neighbourhood. We were mentioned on the BBC... This is a great opportunity to show that young people are not bad and can make a change to bring their community together. As young volunteers, we would like to engage with the political institutions at the highest level and even attract the attention of the national media. How? For example, by arranging a number of educational visits to the Houses of Parliament in London, as well as gaining historical knowledge by visiting important places in the UK. Also to produce media releases.
