Summary

To create a fashion and live music show, by the next generation of talented and dedicated young people, acting as a platform for them to voice their creativity. The objective is to be original, exciting and promote multiculturalism in our London communities. 10 designers would be chosen to take part and given a brief to produce 8 pieces as a collection on their chosen theme, allowing them complete creative freedom whilst supporting them at every stage. The designers are required to present their work alongside an unsigned live band and share 16 models between them in the final show.

Summary

To bring together young artistes from all over London with different backgrounds and from different creative genres to tell a powerful story of the urban youth experience through a professional Theatrical performance. The performance will tour throughout London to unconventional venues like youth prisons, homeless shelters, Street corners, council estates, schools, youth centres and the like- Anywhere young communities and groups are. It will bring creativity to communities and places that are often neglected and segregated, whilst allowing a young community of various artistes to celebrate unity in their creative diversity.

To empower 10 young people from a Northern Irish background and 10 young people from a Polish background, from the same housing estate, to discuss and research social and personal issues facing young people in the area. They will proceed to plan, advertise, set up and follow through a Drop-In Centre, with three sections: an Internet Cafe, providing food from various cultures, a sports hall, and a room providing information on counselling for young people with social or personal issues. This will be a safe place in the estate at weekends, where young people of all cultures can come together.

Summary

A regeneration project that will target The Lace Market Square in Nottingham city centre. The multi-million pound development was completed in 2007, and has since stood unused. Its desolation has had a negative effect on the surrounding community and local businesses, causing further closures and encouraging crime. I propose to open the magnificent central building as a shop to showcase new talented designers and independent design-focused retailers, for a period of 3 – 4 months. The project will host workshops, lectures and events for the local community, and will also hold discussions and think tanks in its café area.

Summary

Frequently, lack of unity arises from a lack in proportional representation. As young people, if we fail to be provided with frequent opportunities through which we are ourselves typified, it is inevitable that as a cohort we may become fragmented and in extreme cases polarized. We believe that through the process of providing a medium through which ALL voices can (and will) be effectively expressed; what will result is the oneness and increased integrity of our community. As such our aim is to publish a lifestyle and fashion magazine (with educative and enterprising accents), that will adequately represent the growing youth-pool in our community. We know, through our panoptic research of the publishing industry in the UK, that there is an increased niche for this; and we believe it not only has the scope to be successful but also for much development.

Summary

My design is a project that gives individuals an opportunity to be creative in a positive way rather than portraying a negative message which brings fear and anti social behaviour within community. The first part will be a planning workshop, where young people can share their ideas and talk about what designs could potentially change someone’s life. The other part will be the practical side, where young people will create there ideas using a computer, T-shirts, bags and hats and a t-shirt, bags and hat machine.

We match university students who are looking for accommodation with older people who would like a home-sharer. The older person would let the student live in a spare room in return for help with household chores. The older person feels more secure at night and enjoys having company in the house, while the student has an interesting experience and saves approximately £5 000 each year in rent. This scheme will help increase understanding between generations, as well as building links within the community.

Summary

I want to run a campaign against the negative media on young people alongside a group of young volunteers, to raise the awareness of the successes and achievements of young people today. The volunteers will travel around schools, community centres and visit various community and religious groups to run workshops and share their message – that young people are the future, whether some like it or not! I’d like every person in our community to contribute towards creating a better image of young people today. I want to create a magazine, which will be posted through every household door in Newham, which will feature successful young people’s stories including up and coming young artists, young academics and young athletes.

Summary

To change the way a community values, buys, prepares and consumes food to improve the physical, social and economic well-being of the community members. My project will set up a school-based cooperative to create a community source of fresh fruit and vegetables. The pupils will have a financial and social incentive to go into their community and get people to buy their produce and eat healthier. To ensure that people can cook the fresh produce, the project will run cooking classes. The project will create a virtuous cycle of pupils selling healthy food and families eating healthy meals.

To set up cultural workshops across all London boroughs where all members of the community will be able to learn and experience other cultures through acting, singing dancing as well as a bit of history. Individuals will be able to get together and share ideas in which will educate other members about their heritage. After completion the participants will then carry what they learnt onto a live performance and show the community members that we are all one family.

Summary

To build community through putting on a bunch of events run entirely by young people. These would serve to break down the negative view of young people (one of the biggest barriers to bringing communities together), and help everyone in our local community have a safe way to get to know each other. We will invite lots of local people to every event so that they can develop strong ties with the people who live near them, and will aim to get the same set of people to each event so that real friendships can be made.

Summary

There is lots of derelict space in the city. We propose to create a project that will unleash youth creativity on shared urban space and facilitate, by creating dialogues between young people and civic institutions, future artistic regeneration of our city. Our highly visible initial project will bring together young people of different ages and backgrounds in a creative endeavour to leave a positive mark on the city. The project will be linked to urbanrebuild.com which will document the project and open dialogues on and about community regeneration that will help to facilitate similar projects in the future.

Summary

I want to improve social integration in neighbourhoods by setting up a skills-swap scheme for women. 'Cooking and Conversation' will allow marginalised migrant women to teach their native dishes to English-speaking women, in exchange for English conversation over a shared meal. The scheme will take place in safe, neutral environment, such as schools or community centres. It will be an opportunity for both sides to learn a little more about each culture, and to create friendships over food.

To put music, art, and the power of artistic expression back into the hands of the people by creating a collective of young artists of all genres, dedicated to making art, putting on events and redefining the territories of artistic identity, promoting the belief that every member of society has a valid voice and has creative potential. We will host a range of music and art events, produce grass roots fanzines and set up a website. Collectively the GSM (Guerilla Arts Movement) will exist as an interactive music scene community.

My big idea to tackle the Big Challenge is to make an anti knife, anti gun crime film that brings young people in different postcodes together, allowing that hidden talent to shine, giving opportunities to see a different side of life. Giving hope to those that dream of a safer England, a safer London. If we can prevent one person from taking or losing a life, this is our contribution to the Big Challenge. We will be using young people from all walks of life, life changers, who are tired of hearing the same old gang talk. Thank you. Bless.

A FreeSchool is a non-hierarchical skillsharing network through which people can share skills and knowledge in an autonomous environment, through the delivery of workshops. Classes will promote alternative approaches to learning and living, building Hull's community by helping people network, build relationships and knowledge creating community cohesion in a city which suffers from high levels of social exclusion. Workshops will be held entirely for free and are for anyone of any age/ability. Our volunteer scheme will provide valuable experience like marketing, running workshops, managing allotments, working with vulnerable people, communicating effectively with minority groups and working in a team.

The project begins with a collection hunt for newspapers all around the community by all community members. The purpose of this is to start a papier mache session within the community centre. The next step will be to gain adhesive and wire. Every child would be placed into a group. There are 5 groups relating to the environment or community. At the beginning of next year there will be an art exhibition to showcase all the work made. Then with a successful outcome it will be duplicated throughout London.

I would like to restore and regenerate a park in the small town in Lanark. Lanark has a long and proud history, old tradions and fine buidings. But has recently been experiencing somewhat neglect from the local council. The park is currently occupied by cheap cider and Buckfast drinkers. It is not a safe place to take a family or elderly people. This is a park that once had a beautiful botanic, has key routes to the clyde valley and New Lanark. Castlebank park was donated to Lanark by the landlord of the grounds. He gave it to the people of Lanark as a token of his respect and gratitude for his town. Now I feel it is disgraceful to see a place of such potential beauty and kindless slowly be decay by broken glass, grafitti and Neds!

Summary

I am a member of the Muslim community in Norwich. There is growing problem in our community where a group of boys, who initially came together to make music, are now being falsely labelled as a criminal gang. Due to this false impression of the group there is now a real intensity between them, the Police and the wider community which has caused needless problems for our community as a whole. We want to solve this problem before it's too late. By using positive music and media we aim to improve relationships, challenge stereotypes and bring the community back together.

Summary

To break down the media hysteria that surrounds the youth of today, and remove stereotypes surrounding them in local communities. The concept would purely involve giving a handful of youths, from a variety of backgrounds, a camera each for a day. They would take shots of their everyday life, hopefully providing images of a stark contrast to those constantly reported by the media, some iconic, others striking. It may also highlight the social difficulties some face. The results would be housed on display in a local art gallery. The camera thus becomes a tool of power for the youth, and can give them the voice that some political movements have often wished they had.

Summary

My big idea for community unity is to organise a massive one day community event aimed at all families living in and around the Broomhall area of Sheffield. I feel that currently within this area, there have been recent tensions largely based around the different cultures. My aim is to unite all cultures by providing activities from each culture represented within the community. I would like to hire the services of an African drumming workshop or activity that is popular within the somalian community for example, that represents the country that it originates from. This will show that all countries have something special to offer to the local community and will emphasise how important it is for families to enjoy activities together regardless of background and ethnicity.

We will provide Street Dance, Street Art & Street Music classes over six days a week. Our classes will be diverse for all ages; abilities & backgrounds. We will have a YAPT; who will lead us and we adopt an anti crime & disorder, anti violence and anti gang culture message to aim to dissuade youths from continuing on the paths that some have started with knife crime, drugs & anti social behaviour.

To give everyone with a speech disability a way to SAY the same words speaking people say most each day. We are putting high frequency words on PowerPoint slides, with the sound added for each word, to give away and use in fun activities that research how useful and essential these words are. We want to make stories, movies and animations that foster language and literacy acquisition using these words, and reveal the plight of living without them. We want to do presentations, have permanently available virtual demonstrations online, and a website for free downloads and information sharing.

To encourage sharing. The colourful community surrounding the Grove and Portobello reflects the rich multicultural history of the area born out of the race riots of the 50s. Ours is a community of diverse Londoners rich with diverse skills, however, the area remains one of the most deprived areas in the UK with higher than average crime, poverty and unemployment rates. We want to develop a programme of skill sharing to encourage young people in the community to exchange skills, collaborate and learn from one another without the need for money. Turning every member into a teacher and a pupil. By creating the 'Portobello Pound', members of our community led by young people can share skills to earn this alternative currency. The currency they earn can then be used to learn new skills from other members and to buy products from local businesses, therefore supporting the local community.

Integrating communities and young people through a common interest. We have lots of young people in the area who participate with their friends and own communities, but with this they never (or Rarely) compete or play with others from different communities. So I would like to use sport as a vehicle for community cohesion and open up horizions to help people realise that what ever creed culture or race we have the same common interests – SPORT. Whether as a player, volunteer, supporter or official we can get all communities together to work and play together as participants and not as the Yemeni team or the Guru Nanak Centre.

to create an international event targeted to the local community and students to celebrate the diversity in our community. The event will be held at Exeter University and will celebrate the Chinese New Year in February 2010. Although I am leading the bid I will be supported by the various international societies we have on campus. We will be targeting community areas that are highly populated with Chinese families and residents, this will help stronger integration of international and UK families, residents and students. We will also engage with the local schools to reach the younger population in our area.
