Summary

To encourage sharing. The colourful community surrounding the Grove and Portobello reflects the rich multicultural history of the area born out of the race riots of the 50s. Ours is a community of diverse Londoners rich with diverse skills, however, the area remains one of the most deprived areas in the UK with higher than average crime, poverty and unemployment rates. We want to develop a programme of skill sharing to encourage young people in the community to exchange skills, collaborate and learn from one another without the need for money. Turning every member into a teacher and a pupil. By creating the 'Portobello Pound', members of our community led by young people can share skills to earn this alternative currency. The currency they earn can then be used to learn new skills from other members and to buy products from local businesses, therefore supporting the local community.

I grew up in west london and miss the sense of community it once had and could so again. not only does a project like this bring people together for the common betterment of their neighbourhood but it also empowers the individual. I think that grass-roots projects like this are the only hope for a happier future for all of us.

This is an incredible idea that something that will draw a community together and transform peoples views of what can be achieved through cooperation, giving and re-evaluation associations with currency and trade into a positive one and something that everyone can be involved in.
